Vanavond hadden we in Lokaal Vredebreuk een compleet afgeladen zaal. Hoogstwaarschijnlijk omdat in feite niemand morgen hoefde te werken. Reden genoeg om eens lekker 3 singer-songwriters uit te komen checken.

De eerste act van de avond was dJEFF. Jeffrey heeft erg poppy songs met positieve energie erin. Zijn gitaarspel viel met name op, dat het erg afwisselend was. Een lekkere vibe, daar draait het om bij dJEFF.

De tweede act is, voor ons in ieder geval, een oude bekende. Daniël van The Sound Of Amnesia speelt een set met een kaliber waar je aan moet wennen. Een zaalvullend geluid veroorzaakt door een man die enkel met zijn stem en zijn gitaar je weet in te pakken en af te voeren. Geen tijd om een biertje te bestellen, want hij weet je aandacht wel vast te houden. Een supersterke performance van iemand die normaal gesproken toch al aardig sterk in zijn schoenen staat.

Nee, wat dat betreft is onze import-singer-songwriter van vanavond wel wat anders. Het lieve meisje Kristen Marie Holly speelt lieve gitaarliedjes (op een van dJEFF geleende gitaar, want die van haar was tijdens de vlucht naar europa gebroken). Door veel bijgeluiden te maken weet ze een gevarieerde set neer te zetten waar iedereen even lekker tot rust kon komen na de set van Daniël.

Volgende week hebben we op zaterdag natuurlijk Kaderock, mis dat zeker niet, want we hebben een paar fantastische artiesten op het programma gezet! Daarnaast hebben we op zondagavond natuurlijk nog Mak Wolven, Tzja Giantor en Arno Loriaux staan. Allemaal lekker uit de buurt, dus dat gaat geheid gezellig worden!

Vandaag was weer een van die dagen die wij, Kat en ik, totaal toegewijd hadden aan het Songwritersguild. Omdat we ter promotie van de optredens in Lokaal Vredebreuk eens in de twee weken een optredende singer-songwriter mee mogen nemen naar het programma Kakafonie op Midvliet FM (waar Ramonaaa ook zit), waren we ook vandaag al vroeg in de weer. Helemaal vanuit Eemshaven (Noordelijkste puntje van Groningen) kwam vandaag onze artiest, Karyn Oliver. Zij zal later vanavond samen met Claudia Sansoucie in Lokaal Vredebreuk optreden. Claudia kwam alleen niet zo vroeg, met name omdat ze al een paar dagen niet zo lekker was. Toch was een gezellig interview en een verrassend radio optreden het resultaat. Karyn leek er niet zo'n probleem mee te hebben dat ze bijna drie kwartier zendtijd voor zichzelf had. Wat anders verwacht je ook van iemand die zelf DJ is.

Om het kort te houden, het verslag van de avond in Lokaal, hoe gezellig de dag ook was. Deze avond stonden naast bovengenoemde singer-songwriters, ook nog de bandleden van de band "Op" op het programma. Voor het gemak van het opbouwen van alle instrumenten, en om het publiek lekker "op" te warmen, hadden we besloten om hen eerst te laten spelen. Geen slechte keus, want door de geluidsproductie wisten we toch nog aardig wat publiek binnen te slepen op een avond die in het begin schrikbarend rustig was. Op speelt nederlandstalige, sterke nummers met hier en daar een aanstootgevende toon in de teksten. Onder andere met een strak samenspel lieten deze rotterdammers weten dat ze al aardig wat jaartjes aan de weg aan het timmeren zijn. Iedereen leek de muziek van dit viertal te waarderen, wat ook te merken was aan het enthousiasme van het publiek, vanaf halverwege de set tot de laatste noot stond het meerendeel van het publiek bij het podium. Een geslaagd optreden van een band die gelukkig een acceptabel geluidsniveau kan aanhouden wanneer er een drumstel op het podium staat.

Na het optreden van Op gebeurde er iets dat niet helemaal in de planning stond. Het optreden van Claudia en Karyn, dat eigenlijk twee aparte sets zouden worden, werden op het laatste moment aan elkaar geplakt. Wel een heel leuk idee, maar ik was een beetje bang dat ik om 11 uur al klaar zou zijn met livemuziek. Gelukkig begrepen de dames dat ze samen wel tot twaalf uur moesten doorspelen. En hoe! Zoals ik hierboven al gemeld had, had Claudia aangegeven niet zo lekker te zijn. Toch was daar wel heel weinig van te merken tijdens haar optreden. Zuivere zang, heel zuivere zang. Van beide dames overigens. Wanneer je die twee dan ook nog eens samen op een podium zet en elkaars nummers in dubbelzang laat spelen, dan krijg je wel iets heel speciaals. Het heeft dan ook grote indruk op mij gemaakt. Het is overigens wel fijn om af en toe engelstalige nummers van een Native speaker te horen, je merkt dan wel dat de nummers een stuk moeilijker te begrijpen zijn, maar wel zo verschrikkelijk sterk in elkaar zitten. Wat dat betreft zouden er van mij een hoop singer-songwriters in hun eigen taal moeten schrijven, daarin kan je jezelf veel beter verwoorden. De dames speelden dan ook totdat ze erbij neervielen. In hun set, die uiteindelijk bijna twee uur duurde, lieten ze veel nummers van hun beide cd's langskomen. Mazzeltje dat ze die ook nog eens meegenomen hadden, waarmee ik uiteraard mijn collectie heb uitgebreid. Aan beide dames daarvoor nog mijn hartelijke dank!

Volgende week hebben we alweer een Amerikaanse singer-songwriter op het programma staan. Kristen Holly zal samen met dJEFF en The Sound of Amnesia een heel speciale avond maken van zondag 27 mei.

Den Haag Songwritersguild + Kaderock = Article in Posthoorn

Yesterday, Ellie, the boss of Lokaal Vredebreuk, informed us about an article about the guild in local newspaper "De Posthoorn". For some reason, we don't receive this paper, while we actually should. So i started a search for a copy. None of my friends get it in the post either, so i had to find another way. Luckily, there were a few copies lying in the bookstore at Holland Spoor. Even though i wasn't allowed to bring it with me, they wanted it there, but after i explained my "important role in the cooperation between the Den Haag Songwritersguild and Kaderock", they let me go with one. Back at the office, i threw it under the scanner, to let it read by all of you! Here it is;

This Sunday - 20 May

Claudia Sansoucie and Karyn Oliver, both from the US will be performing live on Radio Midvliet, between 1pm and 2pm, as a promo for their gig that same evening in Lokaal Vredebreuk. Both are members of the Baltimore Songwriters Association, an organisation that has existed much longer than our one, but seems to be based on muich the same principles. As they are further along the line, we are looking forward to picking their brains and sharing ideas about what works and what doesnt work. Karyn, although no longer the president of the guild, was the founder, so I am sure she has a lot of knowledge about the whole thing.

From the V.I.P Seats - Rosie Finnegan, Margot de Graaff and Alan Black

Deze week was als een verfrissing. Drie solo singer-songwriters, alle drie erg sterk met steengoede nummers. Ieder enkel gewapend met gitaar en stem alleen, het kon niet eenvoudiger, maar iedere artiest op zich was toch zó sterk!

De avond werd afgetrapt met een optreden van Rosie Finnegan. Dit was haar eerste optreden met het Den Haag Songwritersguild, maar volgens mij zowieso haar eerste solo optreden? Misschien zit ik er naast, maar het is duidelijk dat deze dame geen amateur is. Ze heeft ervaring in het spelen met bands. Met een natuurlijk gevoel voor ritme, dynamiek en spelen schitterde ze niet alleen tijdens haar nummers, maar ook in de korte monologen tussen de nummers door. Haar nummers zijn druk beladen met teksten, ze heeft dan ook een hoop te zeggen en ze meent het ook nog eens. Het is fantastich om weer een nieuwe singer-songwriter te "ontdekken", en ze neer te zetten voor een volle zaal in Lokaal Vredebreuk. Dit zal zeker niet de laatste keer zijn dat je van Rosie hoort. Ze had zelf een flinke ierse meute fans meegenomen, die fanatiek meeklapten en zongen tijdens haar nummers.

Tweede in de lijn van drie was Margot de Graaff, die zo vriendelijk was om in te vallen voor de zieke HannekeLaura, die nog herstellende was van een lange termijn ziek zijn. Margot leverde een sterke zelfvertrouwde set af aan het publiek. Margot heeft een gave dat ze altijd perfect zuiver zingt, ik denk niet dat ik ooit één valse noot uit haar strot heb horen komen. Ze sloot haar optreden af met een pakkend nieuw nummer, meer funky dan de rest van haar repertoire. Ik denk dat het een echte scorer is.

Last but not least, Alan Black. Ik heb zijn eerste optreden, wat een half jaartje geleden in Lokaal Vredebreuk was, gemist, en kende hem eigenlijk alleen van zijn sodokunummer wat hij destijds nog op youtube gezet had. Juist daarom was ik behoorlijk onder de indruk van het horen van een erg volwassen, serieuze singer-songwriter. Zijn gitaarspel is sterk, hij speelde een heel uur vol, zonder dat de aandacht van het publiek afzwakte. Ik was echt onder de indruk. Alan is op zoek naar bandleden om een band te starten op het moment, maar ik denk echt dat hij het in zijn eentje prima kan redden. Zijn repertoir is uitgebreid en gevarieerd. Dus Alan, wanneer ga je nou eens beginnen aan dat album? Het was trouwens ook erg lief van hem dat hij zijn moeder meegenomen had op moederdag. Mrs Black was "effe langsgekomen in Lokaal", rechtstreeks uit Australië, het geboorteland van Alan.

En wederom was het een supergezellige avond, het levende bewijs dat solo singersongwriters je net zo goed kunnen vermaken als voltallige bands. Volgende week, naast een optreden van de band Op, staan er twee bloedmooie vrouwelijke singer-songwritertalentes van het Baltimore Songwritersguild op het programma. Claudia Sansoucie en Karyn Oliver zullen hun kunsten aan jullie vertonen.

Rosie Finnegan is a new-comer to the Den Haag scene, so I'm pretty curious to see her in action. Margot de Graaff is stepping in to fill in for Hanneke Laura, who is injured and cant play. Alan Black charmed the audience last time with his song "I hate you Sodoku" so lets see what cynical delights he has in store for us this week!

New forum online!

It has been a while, after some problems with the old forum we decided to give up on that one and start a complete new one. The forum is now hosted on Katbitemusic.com, which is a much more stable provider than the last one. I must admit that the downtime of the old forum made me quite sick sometimes too, for it finally going down and never getting back up again (i'm still complaining to that old provider but anyway...

Radio Midvliet - Singersongwriters on Sunday afternoons

When you wake up with that killer hangover on Sunday mornings, you can now switch on Midvliet and hear a singersongwriter performing live on the radio program Kakofonie. The program runs from 12 til 2pm and most weeks will feature a performance by one of the artists who will be in Lokaal Vredebreuk that same evening. This also give us all a chance to get some nice live recordings for everyone! Big thanks to Edwin van der Hoeven (Leave) for setting this up, and to the folks at Midvliet.

Hartog and Susan Zeegers in half-finale Mooie Noten competition

Congratulations to Hartog, and also to Susan Zeegers who are both through to the half finale of the Mooie Noten, a competition for Amsterdam singersongwriters only, but both these artists have performed on guild nights this year, and we know they both have true quality. Hartog got his place automatically by winning the Hou Je Kop Luisterpop! 2006.

However maybe this is a good time to express some of my personal thoughts about competitions in general. Several guild members have asked me why doesnt the guild start up a competition, maybe something like a Haagse version of Mooie Noten. There are several reasons why we do not plan to do this

1- In my humble opionion competitions suck
2- In Jaaps humble opinion competitions suck
3- competitions suck

And besides that, competitions suck. So we dont want to be involved with such a marlarkey, unless we could somehow make a competition where everything was fair, which we all know is impossible. However there are a few good things about competitions, for example that singersongwriters who deserve attention get it. In many cases this works perfectly.

As soon as a singersongwriter plays with accompaniment, it becomes something different. The art of being able to hold the attention of an audience on your own is a completely different thing. The difference between performing with 1 backing musician and 20 is much smaller than the difference between playing with 1 or none.

What if an organisation changes the rules from only two backing musicians allowed for part of the performance, to allowing an entire band with drumkit and trying to get people to dance and shit. I dunno about this Mooie Noten thing but it does trouble me that they are also opening up to (semi)acoustic acts with maximum three people. I dont know why they are doing that when there are so many awesome singersongwriters in Amsterdam, enough to fill the compteition with talent, so the only reason I can think of is that they are simply trying to get more public in the door. I guess this competition has always been more about the songs than the songwriters themselves but it still seems somewhat of a shame.

Now to me Im in the dark about what the decription "(semi) acoustic" means so if anyone can enlighten me, please do.

The Den Haag Songwriters Guild respects the efforts of other organisations in Holland who organise competitions, and the time and money that go into this. However at this stage and probably never do we wish to join in the circus. We have discussed the idea a little bit but conflict of interest is way too big. And besides once you get half a dozen awesome singersongwriters in a room, it may be very much a question of peronal taste rather than quality of performance or songwriting.

And we book plenty of duos and sometimes even bands on our events, but we are not putting these people in competition with each other, and I think that as soon as you do that, if you call it singersongwriter then it should also be solo. Otherwise it becomes too much reliant on the technical and sympathetic abilities of your musical buddies, the interaction between performers on stage, that kind of thing, whereas a singersongwriter competition should not be judged on those kind of elements.

Just my opinion, feel free to shoot me down if you disagree.

New CD - The Sound Of Amnesia Live to be released

A few days ago, we received some news from The Sound Of Amnesia in our mailbox. He happily announces that his brand-new live album will be released on the 21st of May. The album mainly contains songs that were published on his earlier album, named "Culture, Blood, Religion", but this time the songs are all played in a solo performance.

The first song which has a intro before it starts actually is a complete new song (Envious Gods), that will also be recorded in full setting as soon as a complete band and studio is available (not until July).

Daniël was so kind to send us the cover of his CD as well. He didn't tell us where to order the CD, but i am sure you can find more information about it on his website: www.TheSoundOfAmnesia.com

The sound of Amnesia kept rocking the Pop-in for more than an hour. Symphonic singer/songwriter rock, if you wanted to put it in a square. When you listen to his CD, you are probably questioning yourself how he manages to do that on stage on his own. Well, listen and find out. Growling and grunting, Languid singing, subtile playing and banging on his acoustic guitar, it had it all.

It is truly a revelation to see somebody being so dominant with an acoustic guitar. Whether you like it or not, it does definetly take your attention. The strong fanbase he brought along were quite actively contributing to his gig, so the ambiance was definetly there.

From the V.I.P Seats - Rob Kwakkelstein + Peter Wassenaar, Deliverymen, and The Big Fat Nightingales

Het heeft even geduurd, vorige week was het immers Koninginnenach, waardoor er iets anders op het programma stond. Deze zondag werd de programmering weer door het DHSG overgenomen, wat een mooie combinatie van twee duo's en een acoustisch bandje opleverde.

Om te beginnen speelde Rob Kwakkelstein op de piano met Peter Wassenaar op de contrabas een selectie van Tom Lehrer's repertoire. Een gewaagde keus, zeker omdat Tom Lehrer bekend staat om zijn snelle, bijna hakkende tekstlijnen. Toch wist Rob een hele goede combinatie van pianospel en duidelijk verstaanbare tek sten te brengen. Daarbij klonk de contrabas van Peter als een heel lekkere aanvulling op het geheel. Het is dan niet een optreden waar zelfgeschreven nummers gespeeld werden, integendeel, maar een zeer goede afwisseling is het wel. Daarnaast ben ik bang dat ik het niet voor elkaar ga krijgen om Tom Lehrer zelf te boeken voor een guild avond. Daar is Rob zeker een goed alternatief voor.

Van Tom Lehrer naar iets compleet anders. Dennis Flinterman heeft een keer eerder in Lokaal gestaan voor ons. Toen speelde hij solo een aantal nummers die hij ook met zijn band, Delivery Men, speelt. Vandaag had hij echter besloten om met de hele band te komen. De kracht achter deze band is dat ze met een minimale setup een maximaal geluid weten te creëren. Niet zozeer het volume, dan wel het spectrum. Een grote variatie aan ritme en melodieën geven zijn nummers net datgene wat je aan het meedeinen laat gaan. Zijn liedjes zijn gemeend en k linken lekker in je oren. Een enkeling uit het publiek danste er zelfs op. Gezelligheid alom.

De laatste act van de avond waren The Big Fat Nightingales. Een act waarvan het stemgeluid de naam waarmaakt. Liz doet een beetje denken aan Nathalie Merchant. Een superzuivere diepe warme stem. Liz zelf speelt op een acoustische gitaar, terwijl Jaap op een semi-acoustische hollowbody speelt, waar een prachtige klank uit komt. Geen effecten, maar gewoon puur. Daarnaast vult Jaap haar regelmatig aan met aanvullende achtergrondzang. Haar nummers zijn diepgaand met een tweede betekenis. Een songwriter naar mijn hart, simplistisch, maar zeker niet simpel. Ik ben benieuwd wanneer we haar weer kunnen uitnodigen.

Na een week afwezigheid was het ook gelijk dubbel gezellig vanavond. Er hing een lekker sfeertje, er werd, soms tot ongenoegen van de spelende artiesten, flink wat afgebabbeld en ondanks het slechtere weer was het merendeel van de mensen lekker vrolijk.

Dave Dobbyn to play in the Melkweg

Dave Dobbyn is one of New Zealand's most loved and respected musicians. Here is a link to his wiki page in English and in Dutch

The guy is a complete legend, and if you want to see him in action he will be performing in the Melkweg on June 30. This gig will sell out, so I would recommend getting your tickets now.

I saw him perform last year in Hyde Park, and it was one of the best gigs I saw all of last year. I fully recommend this concert, I will be going to check it out myself for sure

The Big Fat Nightingales are a duo from Amsterdam. Rob Kwakkelstein is a bar pianist who is also doing an interview on Radio Midvliet at 12pm this afternoon, plus we will be talking about the guild. Also playing in Lokaal tonight is Dennis Flinterman from the Deliverymen

Kaderock Lineup

We have been given the illustrious task of filling two and a half hours at Kaderock with the best szingersongwriters we can muster. There will be a seperate tent with a full PA to give us a fair chance volume-wise with the main stage, but we have put some louder things on when there is music on the main stage.. So here is the lineup:

EON: Singersongwriter extrodinaire Phinx and guitarist Evert Zeevalking present powerful Indiepop. These guys are pros so expect an adreneline charged punch to the face with awesome songs and who knows maybe these guys can get lazy Den Haag up and dancing. Eon puts on a great show and has songs that deliver

Leine: Leine plays beautiful, delicate songs with hints of jazz and bossanova. On her album "Songs at the Dinner Table" you can hear a genuine love for music, and she plays with her heart. Her compositions express a pure naive way of looking at the world, and her performances are very touching.

Stanislaw: This duo kicked up a storm in Lokaal Vredebreuk and we couldnt wait to show them to a bigger audience. Oscar Langerak is a multi-talented young musician who has created soundscapes for mad-cap poet Stanislaw to recite, no, exclaim, no, proclaim, his raw, gutsy poetry over. This time they are bringing a band with them, so who knows what will happen. Den Haag loves you back, guys!

Tino van Leeuwen: Tino has had a long musical past in Den Haag. From his crazy escapades in his Time Machine, numerous albums, videos, but also poetry and artwork, he has been spreading his art over the city since 1997. With a new album under his belt be prepared for the next phase...

Katbite: Fresh from a sucessful stint in the GPZH, Kat is double armed with guitar and piano and a whole bunch of new songs. Katbite has turned a musical corner, delving into experimental percussion and a fresh approach. The bite is definatly still there, but with an even broader range of musical styles, those who complained that this band couldnt be put in a box are about to get even more frustrated
